Lewis Hamilton will be looking to produce a solid performance in qualifying at the French Grand Prix to secure the best possible grid position for Sunday’s race. The 37-year-old has struggled over the course of this year due to Mercedes’ distinct lack of pace but managed to secure back-to-back podium finishes in his last two outings in Britain and Austria.
Mercedes will be desperately hoping to improve their on-track fortunes when the FIA’s new directive on porpoising comes into effect at next month’s Belgian Grand Prix. However, the Silver Arrows have already been criticised over the development by Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, who believes that Toto Wolff has been lobbying officials in order to gain a performance advantage next year.
“I think there’s an awful lot of lobbying to change regulations significantly for next year, lifting [the side of the floor] so a certain team can run its car lower and benefit from that concept,” said Horner earlier this week.
“It’s a very late point in the year to be doing this. I think the president’s doing the right thing, he’s collating all the information, and hopefully a sensible solution can be found because it’s too late in the day for fundamental regulation changes, which something like that would be.”
