M1 CLOSED: Traffic mayhem as four lanes gridlocked – police shut motorway

The SYP Operational Support Unit tweeted just after 10:30am today: “*M1 SOUTH J33-32 CLOSED* Unfortunately a vehicle has shed its load, this shows you why the police enforce load security and safety.” The M1 is currently closed southbound between J33 and J32.

Traffic is currently building and motorists are being urged to avoid the area as only one lane is open with cars travelling at 20mph.

The SYP Operational Support Unit added: “We are currently working with @HighwaysYORKS to get traffic moving via Lane 4 ONLY at 20mph, we are hoping to get everyone moving within the next 20 minutes.”

National Highways confirmed that the motorway was shut due to a “spillage of debris and gravel” affecting all lanes.

Traffic officers are at the scene and are assisting with traffic management.

Images show gravel spread across lanes one, two, and three, with a small amount in lane four causing traffic to move at 20mph.

National Highways Yorkshire tweeted: “Lane 4 is remains open on the M1 south between J33-J32 whilst lanes 1,2 & 3 remain closed to clear the spillage.

“There is a speed limit of 20mph for lane 4, so please allow extra time for your journey as there is currently 8 miles congestion on the approach with 45 min delays.”

Congestion is building on the motorway near Rotherham in South Yorkshire.
